Welcome to Cumbria Starting Point, located in Whitehaven Town Centre – a unique supportive environment of relationships and opportunities in which people can recover from addiction and grow a new future. We focus on recovery and a positive future.
Starting Point was formed by a group of former substance users who were coming to the end of mainstream service support. They identified how easy it is to relapse at this critical time. They wanted to support each other in finding a long-term solution. They designed one that worked and we now have a team of volunteers all of whom have recovered from substance misuse.
Within their crucial continuing support system the former users recovered. Through the experience of their own recovery they wanted to give something back and help others in the community. They made a commitment to help substance users achieve their own recovery, and maintain a fulfilling lifestyle, through the specialised, continuing aftercare they had designed for themselves. The structure allows mutuality without collusion – “you can’t kid a kidder because the kidder has been there themselves”. They see the red flags of relapse early and can respond appropriately to them. Members in later stages of recovery provide hope for new members that recovery is possible whilst they themselves gain a sense of purpose, increased self-esteem and continue to grow in positive relationships with others.
Starting point offers a unique supportive environment in which people can recover from addiction and grow a new future. It injects and nurtures a hope that is contagious – hope when it is needed most. The atmosphere is distinctive, truly non-judgmental, safe and accepting, which strengthens members through their recovery. Starting Point offers hope to create an alternative lifestyle free from substances and provides opportunities to gain confidence and skills needed to grow again.
